“Virtual Singapore” is a 3D modeling project of the entire country that the Singapore National Research Foundation is undertaking from 2014 to 2018. This government initiative is directly authorized by the Prime Minister ‘s Office of Singapore. In cooperation with relevant ministries such as the Land Management Authority (SLA) and the Information Media Development Agency (GOVTECH), they build a three-dimensional model of terrain and buildings, manage infrastructure such as public transportation and electric power, disaster countermeasures, hygiene management, environment. The software used as the platform of “Virtual Singapore” is “3DEXPERIENCity” developed by we Dassault Systèmes. Simulation and analysis necessary for policy formulation and execution can be performed by linking data sent from municipal agency system and various sensors in town to objectized three dimensional terrain and building model. We strongly believe that Japanese local governments would learn many lessons from this project and the software we develop.

“Low cost renewable energy for resilient supply”

Low cost renewables for resilient energy supply

Cost of electricity from renewable sources has fallen fast in the last 2 years. Development is seen both in industrial countries as well as emerging economies.

Recently China has accelerated their deployment dramatically outpacing all other countries in the solar and wind sectors.

The low costs will result in renewable electricity dominate supply to industries who need low electricity prices, as well as household enjoying low cost electricity for a good standard of living.

As our dependence on technologies using electricity has increased, electricity is not only a matter of costs. Supply systems resilient against natural disasters, or possible deliberate assaults are valuable.

Distributed renewable generation can balance essential supply in isolated grids at regional, local and household level when large generators or transmission fail. Local batteries used in households or microgrids in addition provide low cost grid balancing service during normal operation.

“Painting with Zeros and Ones – creating The Next Rembrandt”

The advance of Artificial Intelligence is changing the world on a daily basis. What was once the realm of science fiction is now all over our newsfeed. For better or for worse.

But what about creativity? Will AI ever really be able to hack the muse and take over our uniquely human gift of creativity? And, even more importantly, how will this affect the creative industry as a whole?

With the idea to explore the limits of automated creativity, in 2016 the Dutch Ad agency J. Walter Thompson started the project ‘The Next Rembrandt’. The task: to analyze the integral oeuvre from artist, understand the data and create a new painting mimicking the style of the Dutch genius.
In this session, we will talk about how ‘The Next Rembrandt’ was made, its creative impact and the business model behind the automation of creativity.

“New prospects of future healthcare – holistic integrative medicine for sustainable society with a long healthy life span”

We Japanese are now faced with problems of population decline and super-aged society. Disease structures of modern medicine have been recently changed from acute to chronic disorders, most of which are lifestyle diseases. As a consequence, the cost of healthcare is annually rising and a paradigm shift is observed from medicine aiming at “Cure” to that aiming at “Care”. Our Ministry of Health, Labor & Welfare proposed the Integrated Community Care System (ICCS) to local governments, but each local government is busily engaged in conventional medicine or care welfare services. So, integrative medicine is expected to play an important role for the ICCS.

“For the Osaka Business Park of the smart communities initiatives”

Takenaka Corporation defines smart community as a place that creates new value and aims at a sustainable society through “connection.” As an example that partially realized this idea, I will introduce the Osaka Business Park (OBP). The development of OBP started in 1970. Since its opening in 1986, OBP has been promoting city development by private initiative for 47 years. Recent intensifying competition among areas, however, has created a sense of urgency, so in 2011 we began advocating a vision for a “renovation-type smart community that grows sustainably.” Since then, we have been moving forward with city development based on strengthening of area management, with four strategic themes: (1) Functional complex, (2) Vibrant appeal, (3) Environmental symbiosis, and (4) Safety and security.

The SPECIFIC IKC led by Swansea University with industrial and academic partners is delivering an innovative concept of ‘Buildings as Powerstations’. This delivers energy positive solar powered buildings that generate, store and release their own electricity and heat which can save consumers money and deliver more buildings and reduced carbon emissions. The seminar will explore the new types of printed PV underdevelopment aswell as novel heat generation and storage materials which can be used to move summer energy into winter. The innovative new materials and products have recently been showcased on a building called the ‘Active Classroom’ which is an energy positive steel intensive building fabricated using offsite premanufactured panels and includes eight new technologies. Operating in South Wales (UK) even with somewhat irregular sunshine the building does not require external supply of either gas or electricity and has been used to power an EV all summer. This technology has global potential and is applicable to houses, schools, offices, factories and hospitals; indeed any building with a reasonably large area to volume ratio allowing efficient energy solar capture.
