Hiroshi Matsumoto was appointed President of RIKEN in 2015 and Director of International Institute for Advanced Studies in 2018. Prior to his appointment he served as President of Kyoto University from 2008 to 2014. He is a specialist in space radio science, space plasma physics and space solar power systems (SSPS). He has received many awards and honors including the Russian Federation of Cosmonautics Gagarin Medal, the Government of Japan's Medal with Purple Ribbon and the URSI Gold Booker Medal, the Chevalier in French Legion of Honor and the Honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Born in 1978 in Kyoto, Mr. Matsuyama obtained his Master’s degree in Agriculture and Life Sciences from the University of Tokyo. After three and half years of training at Heirin-ji Temple, Niiza, he became the deputy priest of Taizoin Temple in 2007. Matsuyama is acclaimed for organizing intercultural activities such as Zen experience tours for foreign visitors and talks at embassies in Japan and at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club. In May 2009, he was elected as a Japan Tourism Agency’s Ambassador for its “Visit Japan” Campaign. He has been a member of Kyoto’s Ambassadors for Tourism since 2011, and was listed as one of “The Top 100 People of the New Generation 2016” in Nikkei Business. And he was appointed as a fellow of US-Japan Leadership Program from 2016. In 2018, he was invited to Israel as the delegate of Young Leaders Program. And he also became a visiting lecturer at Stanford Univ. He received The Award of Commissioner for Cultural Affairs and Shigemitsu Award from Japan society in Boston in 2019.
As a young representative of the Zen Sect in Japan, Matsuyama has interacted with many religious leaders, such as having an audience with the Roman Catholic Pope and conversing with the 14th Dalai Lama. He also participated in the Davos World Economic Forum in 2014, and continues to work actively beyond national and religious borders. He is the author of the book, Forget What’s Important First: 30 Zen Teachings for the Wavering Soul (Sekai Bunka Publishing, 2014) Strolling around Zen Gardens in Kyoto (PHP Publishing, 2016) Introduction of ZEN for workers (Kodansya Publishing, 2016).

Dr. Uchida is currently a professor of social and cultural psychology at the Kokoro Research Center, Kyoto University. Upon receiving her PhD in social psychology from Kyoto University in 2003, she started her academic career as a visiting researcher at the University of Michigan and Stanford University. Since 2008, she has been based at the Kokoro Research Center. As a cultural psychologist, she studies the psychological mechanisms behind the experience of emotions like happiness. Her cross-cultural studies also examine how a participation in meaningful cultural practices fosters these psychological processes. Dr. Uchida is a 2019-20 Berggruen fellow at Stanford University.

Seiji Kumagai studied Buddhist philosophy and received his Ph.D. in 2009 from Kyoto University. In 2011, he became an assistant professor at Hakubi Center for Advanced Research of Kyoto University. Since 2013, he has been Uehiro Associate Professor at Kokoro Research Center of Kyoto University from then until present. Since 2017, he has been a divisional director at Kokoro Research Center. He has been also invited by many universities as a guest professor/researcher such as Numata Professor (at University of Vienna in 2018).
His field of research is Buddhist Madhyamaka philosophy in India, Tibet and Bhutan, and also that of Bon religion. He has also studied history of Tibetan and Bhutanese Buddhism. He published books such as The Two Truths in Bon (Kathmandu: Vajra Publications, 2011), Bhutanese Buddhism and Its Culture (Kathmandu: Vajra Publications, 2014), and Buddhism, Culture and Society in Bhutan (Kathmandu: Vajra Publications, 2018), and also many academic articles on the philosophy of Indo-Himalayan Buddhism and Bon religion.
