10:45~11:30 | Keynote Speech "University’s Role for Local Community Vitalization" |
---|---|
American universities pursue globalism in education and research by accepting students and staff from all over the world and aiming at world-class research accomplishments At the same time, they are surprisingly “local” in the sense that they place high value on activities that directly contribute to the economy, education, and community in the local towns and cities. In the city of Pittsburgh, U.S., in which the speaker’s university exists, two universities are playing critical roles for the city’s vitalization: one is University of Pittsburgh that is well known for medicine and biology, and the other is Carnegie Mellon Universities for computer science, engineering and robotics. This talk will introduce such activities by the two universities, which hopefully will provide some hints for similar activities in Keihanna.

12:45~13:20 | "What’s Good and Bad About the Future of Cities" |
---|---|
The next decades will see the greatest increase in urban growth in the world’s history with roughly 3 billion more citizens of the world moving into cities. The pressure on cities is mounting.
Second, at the same time, 21st century technologies are beginning to transform the urban eco-system and the way cities operate. Third, citizens around the world are increasingly seeking to be heard as cities are re-designed and transformed. These forces combine into a global demand for “smart city” talent, design, solutions, construction, and operation. For cities, regions, or provinces with foresight, this demand for smart city solutions around the world is an opportunity to build a new engine of job creation, economic growth, foreign direct investment, and the development of export markets. One of the best ways to do this is to build both the content and capacity as a leading source of smart city solutions and also the brand and reputation for such smart city leadership. To do this, in short, 1. Make your urban centers “innovation laboratories” for smart city solutions, especially encouraging entrepreneurs and innovative companies to develop smart city solutions across all sectors of urban life. 2. Engage your existing institutions (universities, companies, finance, workforce, citizens) in inventing, designing and producing smart city solutions. 3. Create joint ventures that give credibility in the places where urban growth will be dramatic, such as Asia and Africa. 4. Develop an new export economy based on the product of these three steps. |

Special Lectures "The Future Starting from a Dialogue with the Earth"When I start talking about environment and ecology, I always mention the comment of Mahatma Gandhi, the India’s non-violent advocate fighter who let India to her independence. He said “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.”
This comment is one of the best advice to humans who live in this century. The U.N. declared the decade from 2011 to 2020, the “Decade on Biodiversity!” This means many people in this world began to recognize the important of understanding biodiversity is essential and vital for the existence of human being. Students see and watch almost all the processes of growing those plants. On the farming field in the university, students uses not only the sense of seeing but also sense of hearing, sense of touching, sense of smelling and taste. Activity on the fields enrich the minds of students with the knowledge about surrounding nature. We can start the journey from here to open the future of mankind. Commemorative Lectures "Dream for a city in nature"A man-made city devoid of nature can erode the humanity and creativity of its residents and curb their intellectual output. Such an environment would only harm the healthy development of the next generation. Over the coming years, as Japan faces a shrinking population, it is predicted that the sweeping use of robotic automation will boost the productivity of social and corporate activities and major man’s activity will shift to services and intellectual productions. Shorter working hours and work-sharing will become a norm. Social infrastructure such as ICT and autonomous transport systems will evolve, proliferate and become more affordable. All these will enable us to work from wherever we are, thus bringing about a telecommuting society. Those who work from home surrounded by lush nature would feel more human and contribute to greater efficiency in their social and corporate activities. I suggest that Keihanna Science City aim to become a model for such “cities in nature.”
